Highland Community College Coach William “B.J.” Smith Pleads Guilty

Highland Community College women’s basketball coach William “B.J.” Smith pleaded guilty Tuesday (April 1, 2014) morning in St. Louis, Missouri.

Smith, 49, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and five counts of mail fraud. As part of a plea agreement, additional counts of mail fraud and receipt of stolen vehicles were dropped.

Smith was arrested in April 2013 and is one of 21 people charged in a multistate car theft ring.

Vanderbilt University Defensive Line Coach Vavae Tata Pleads Guilty

Vanderbilt University defensive line coach Vavae Tata pleaded guilty on Wednesday (March 5, 2014) in Nashville, Tennessee.

Tata plead guilty as part of a plea agreement to a charge of drunk driving and will have the charge of leaving the scene of an accident dismissed. As part of the plea deal, he will lose his license for one year, attend an alcohol safety course, perform 24 hours of community service, pay a $350 fine and serve 48 hours in jail with the rest of the 11-month, 29-day sentence suspended.

Tata, 37, was arrested on February 16, 2014 after he struck two parked vehicles and fled the scene on foot. He had a blood-alcohol content of 0.18.

Tata will not have a position on the coaching staff in 2014 after pleading guilty.

Vanderbilt University defensive line coach Vavae Tata was arrested on Sunday (February 16, 2014) in Nashville, Tennessee.

Tata, 37, was arrested after he struck two parked vehicles and fled the scene on foot. He was located several blocks away and admitted being the driver of the vehicle that crashed. Tata had a blood-alcohol content of 0.18.

UPDATE: Tata plead guilty on Wednesday (March 5, 2014) and will not have a position on the coaching staff in 2014.

Bowling Green State University offensive line coach Bill Durkin was arrested on Saturday (August 24, 2013) in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Durkin was arrested at 2:54 a.m. About seven hours after being released, he was involved in an accident when another vehicle ran a stop sign and hit him. The other driver, who was at fault in the accident, was cited for failure to yield, while Durkin was cited for driving under a license suspension because of the arrest earlier in the day.

Durkin, 42, has been put on administrative leave after this incidents.
